2018 Alder Science Fair
The 2018 Alder Avenue Science Fair was held on March 7th in the library. The event was the culmination of five months of researching, experimenting, writing, building, and practicing. Thirty-one students from sixth and seventh grades gave their presentations to the judges, and winners were determined in five different categories. There were also medals given to the top three overall projects in the entire fair, along with a “People’s Choice” award that was voted on by 5th grade GT students visiting from the Miller School.
Seventh grader Krisha Patel took home the overall gold medal for her project that compared the effectiveness of various brands of lactase, an enzyme supplement often taken by people with lactose intolerance. The silver medal went to Sadia Rahman for her project that measured the amount of carbon dioxide produced by yeast when mixed with different sugar substitutes. Finally, sixth grader Ranajoy Gupta received the bronze medal for his experiment that determined the Vitamin C content of red peppers after they were prepared by different cooking methods.
Jordana Buccilli (Behavioral and Social Science) and Michael Piskun (Earth Science) were category winners along with Krisha, Sadia, and Ranajoy. The People’s Choice award went to Cassidy Brown for her work with music and the behavior of Brazza’s monkeys at the Cape May County Zoo.
Alder science teachers Miss Cunningham and Mrs. Hinlicky served as judges, along with GT teachers Miss Hunt from the Miller school and Mrs. Pettit from Davenport. Big thanks to them!
All of the students who participated today are registered to compete in the Jersey Shore Science Fair on March 17th at Stockton University. Congratulations to all of our competitors and best of luck at Stockton!
