The 2019 Fernwood Avenue Middle School Spelling Bee was held today in the auditorium. After thirteen intense rounds, a total of 350 words, and almost 3½ hours, a winner was finally determined. We are proud to announce that the champion was a 7th grade student, Ethan Andemariam. Second place went to Timothy Le. After a spell-off, Cami Alfaro took third place, Haylee Cass-Adams Johnson was fourth, and Natasha Wagner finished fifth.
Ethan will next be representing Fernwood and EHT at the South Jersey Spelling Bee on March 16th against other school champions from throughout South Jersey. Good luck, Ethan… we’re sure you’ll do a great job representing Fernwood.
Mrs. Lenko, Fernwood's school librarian, served as our pronouncer, and she did a great job. Mrs. Papas, one of Fernwood's counsellors, was a scribe. Finally, Mrs. Moss, the district Supervisor of English, served as our other scribe. If you see them in school, please thank them for helping us out.
Congratulations to all of our competitors today on an impressive display of spelling! Thank you to all of the family members and friends who were able to attend, and an extra thanks to those parents and guardians who were able to contribute a snack or drink for the party afterwards. I really appreciate it!
